Cognitive Science (Memory) CPD

Description

This CPD programme will explore the role of cognitive science in teaching and learning.

It will show you how to put research into practice through a range of practical strategies to use in your classroom.

These sessions will explore research into how cognitive science can help you become a more effective practitioner, including learnings from the EEF review of Cognitive Science Approaches in the Classroom.

The series of three sessions will look at:

  • Models of memory, and the role of retrieval and encoding in utilizing long-term memory.
  • The principles of retrieval practice, and exploration of which examples of classroom practice align with these.
  • Ideas and models for strengthening encoding when developing memory, including dual coding.
  • The programme will also develop participants’ ability to cascade their learning, including:
  • How to design, deliver and evaluate effective professional development, including incorporating EEF recommendations.
  • How principles of retrieval and encoding can help us design effective PD.

The programme will take place over three afternoons. Participants will be expected to attend all three sessions, engage with tasks in between sessions and disseminate learning in their own setting. This program is suitable for current or aspiring leaders of practice as well as classroom teachers looking to develop their understanding of the role of cognitive science in teaching and learning.
