Mental Health and PSHE Education

Relevant to KS1 and 2 Practitioners, PSHE Leads, Teaching Assistants

Description

Understanding development. Promoting resilience. Supporting every child.

This CPD session explores children’s mental health and its impact on development, learning and wellbeing. It combines research-informed insights with practical strategies to support pupils effectively in the classroom.

The session begins by developing understanding of the biological foundations of mental health, including how risk and protective factors influence a child’s stress response. Participants will consider the connections between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours, and how these shape a child’s overall wellbeing.

A strong focus is placed on practical, classroom-based approaches, supported by accessible psychoeducation on the developing brain and its role in emotional regulation and resilience.

Participants will explore how to:

  • Recognise how mental health can impact learning, behaviour and development

  • Apply strategies that promote emotional wellbeing and resilience

  • Use “protective conversations” to support pupils experiencing difficulties

  • Create supportive classroom environments that reduce stress and increase engagement

  • Access appropriate signposting and resources to support pupils and families

Through practical examples and reflective discussion, this session equips teachers with the knowledge and strategies needed to respond confidently and sensitively to pupils’ mental health needs.
