Improvisation
Relevant to Music Leaders, Heads of Department, Classroom Teachers.
Description
This practical CPD session introduces simple, accessible approaches to teaching improvisation for pupils at the early stages of learning in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. The session focuses on building confidence and creativity through structured approaches that support all pupils to engage successfully in improvisation.
Participants will explore how to:
- Introduce improvisation through clear, accessible starting points
- Use limited note sets and rhythmic patterns to provide structure and support.
- Apply call-and-response techniques to bridge copying and creating
- Develop listening skills, phrasing and musical awareness.
- Extend short ideas into longer, more developed musical phrases.
This is a hands-on session, with participants engaging in practical activities that can be transferred directly into the classroom. All strategies are adaptable across instruments and suitable for whole-class and mixed-ability settings.
Participants are encouraged to bring an instrument; however, instruments will be available if needed.
