From phonics to fluency and reading for pleasure in Year 2 (Year 2 teachers)
Relevant to Y2 teachers.
Description
Securing foundations. Building fluency. Inspiring lifelong readers.
This focused CPD session supports Year 2 teachers in strengthening the transition from systematic phonics teaching to fluent, confident reading. Drawing on evidence-informed practice, it ensures secure coverage of Phase 5 while supporting pupils to move towards automaticity and fluency.
The session addresses the dual priority in Year 2 classrooms: securing rapid progress for pupils who have not yet met expected phonics standards, while extending and deepening reading for those who are ready to move beyond decoding.
Participants will explore how to:
- Secure consistent, high-quality teaching of Phase 5 phonics
- Support pupils to develop fluency through repeated reading, modelling and practice
- Accelerate progress for pupils who did not meet the expected standard
- Foster engagement and motivation through the Reading for Pleasure (RfP) strand (ECR7)
With a strong emphasis on practical strategies and classroom application, this session equips teachers to build confident, fluent readers while nurturing a sustained enjoyment of reading.
